BOTOX 101
Botox has become increasingly popular over the past few years, especially among younger clients in their twenties and thirties. This is a shift from the traditional demographic of patients over 40. Why? Because Botox is not just for treating existing wrinkles, it’s an excellent preventative treatment!
The best time to start is when you first notice subtle lines forming on your forehead, between your brows, or around your eyes. Treating early can help prevent deeper wrinkles from forming over time.
In this post, we will cover:
What Botox and Dysport are and how they work
The difference between Botox and Dysport
What to expect during and after your treatment
What is Botox/Dysport?
Botox® and Dysport® are neuromodulators that work by temporarily relaxing specific facial muscles. By reducing the movement of these muscles, they help smooth the appearance of wrinkles and prevent new ones from forming.
They are commonly used on areas such as the forehead, between the eyebrows, around the eyes, and along the jawline or neck. The treatments are most effective on dynamic lines, which are the wrinkles that appear when you make facial expressions like smiling, frowning, or raising your eyebrows. Over time, repeated muscle movement can also create static lines, which are visible even when your face is at rest. With regular treatments, neuromodulators can also help soften these static lines, making wrinkles less noticeable over time.
Botox vs. Dysport
While Botox and Dysport are made by different manufacturers, they both use the same active ingredient and work in a very similar way to relax targeted muscles. The main difference lies in how the formulas are designed, Dysport may spread a little more easily and does kick in within two days, while Botox is often more precise taking a bit longer to kick in. Both deliver comparable, natural-looking results.
What to Expect During Your Botox Appointment
During your appointment, you’ll begin with a consultation to discuss your goals, medical history, and any previous treatments. This helps ensure your treatment plan is safe, effective, and tailored specifically to you. Before injections, the skin will be cleansed and small marks are made to guide precise injection placement.
The injections themselves are quick and minimally invasive, typically lasting only a few minutes. You may feel a slight pinch but the treatment is generally very manageable. After the injections, it’s important to avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas for at least 24 hours and to skip strenuous exercise or alcohol immediately afterward. Mild redness or swelling is normal and should resolve quickly.
Results from Botox usually become visible within three to seven days, with full effects appearing at the two week mark when a follow up appointment is recommended to assess the results and make any necessary adjustments. The results typically last about three to four months.
